At Gondrand, even the heaviest air freight takes wing
We’re equally happy to take on both simple as well as more complicated jobs. For example, our German subsidiary Gondrand ATEGE recently shipped an out-of-gauge consignment from Frankfurt to Seoul.
This particular consignment, bound for South Korea, contained steel plates. The largest item was 13.5 metres long and weighed around 21 tons. The cargo flight was also carrying an additional Gondrand shipment weighing a total of 74 tons. As a rule, transport for consignments containing out-of-gauge items has to be booked a week in advance to ensure that everything runs effectively. In this instance, a crane was needed to unload the steel plates from the truck, as well as an Asiana Airlines Boeing 747 freighter nose loader, as sideways loading was not possible.
No gaps in our security chain
The fact that the consignment was booked by an "unknown consignor" in Germany was another unique aspect of this order. According to EU regulations, a secure logistics chain can only be guaranteed if a "known consignor" issues a safety declaration in advance. If the consignor is unknown, the entire shipment is subjected to a rigorous security check at the departure airport. As the steel plates were too large for a conventional x-ray check, the cargo pallets were examined using highly sensitive detection devices known as sniffers, which can detect even the most minute quantities of explosives. The cargo was declared secure and, thanks to Gondrand ATEGE's exact planning and management, reached the consignee in perfect condition and on time.
